Being healthy provides endless benefits, but did you know it can play a part in your overall happiness? Yes it’s true, the two are connected. People who eat right more often, exercise on a regular basis, and get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep at night tend to be happier than those that don’t.

So if you’re ever feeling down and out, try implementing any of the following five tips to lift your spirits up.

1. Nutrition

What you eat can play a big role in how you feel. If your diet consists of mostly processed and packaged foods, this could be a reason for a bad mood. Not only do those kinds of foods put you on the fast track to putting on the pounds, but they don’t nourish your brain and body like whole foods do.

Whole foods like fruits, veggies, proteins, and whole grains directly affect your brain and how well it functions. So remember the less processed the better!

2. Exercise

When you work out, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins trigger positive feelings which unavoidably make you feel happy. People who exercise regularly experience better sleep, reduced stress, less tendency to feel depressed, and even a boost in self confidence, which are all factors that lead down the road of happiness.

You don’t need to run a marathon to fire up those endorphins. Anything that gets your body moving and staying active will have the same effect.

3. Pillow Time

Getting the right amount of sleep each night has a huge impact on your mood. Lack of rest can lead to feeling crappy and tired the whole day, which typically doesn’t produce happy vibes. It can make you feel more irritable, stressed, angry, sad, short tempered, and even depressed.

On the contrary, getting an adequate amount of rest makes you feel more energized throughout the day, which in turn does result in those happy vibes. You’re likely to be more productive and have a better day when you get the proper amount of rest. So if you’re struggling to get enough sleep, try going to bed an hour before your usual bedtime to see if it helps.

4. Outdoors

Studies have shown that spending time outside to connect with nature, and better yet exercising outside, can have a profound effect on how you feel. Nature seems to have some sort of natural healing powers on the human body. Sunshine and a dose of vitamin D can lift your mood drastically.

Next time you’re feeling the blues, head outside to participate in an activity like working out, going for a hike, taking the dog for a walk, going on a run, tending the garden, or playing at the park with your kids.

5. Social

Maintaining a social life and seeing your friends and family on a regular basis is just as important for healthy living as exercise and nutrition. Like exercising, socializing releases endorphins that make you happy and generate a better mood.

The majority of the human race naturally craves human interaction, so we already feel a tendency to want to be around others, but while life gets busy and things get pushed to the side, it’s sometimes hard to maintain a regular social life. So be sure to make time for it! If you don’t, social isolation can occur, which leads to stress, anxiety, depression, and other health problems. Schedule weekly dates with your friends or relatives and make an effort to meet new people outside of your usual circle.
