When looking at meat choices I make my decision based on the fat to protein ratio, and in that battle a lean beef patty will destroy a hot dog. Hot dogs contain about 13 grams of fat and only 4 grams of protein. An 85% lean hamburger patty weighs in with 4 times the protein at 16 grams to the same 13 grams of fat. If you’re really watching your calories, I would go for an even leaner beef patty or opt for a turkey or veggie burger, and don’t forget to grill the meat to cook out some of the fat.

Fun Suggestion: Try a lettuce wrap hamburger. Skip out on the bun and wrap your burger in a large, crispy lettuce leaf. Or grill chicken and vegetables on a kabob for a bit of a twist on the classic BBQ choices.

The Battle: Lemonade vs. Unsweetened Iced Tea
The Victor: Unsweetened Iced Tea

America loves the tangy sweetness of lemonade, but it’s loaded with sugar and packed with calories. So cut the lemonade and opt for a simple unsweetened iced tea. While you might feel the need to add sugar, try to keep it minimal or leave it out altogether. You might find over time you don’t even feel the need to sweeten it up.

Fun Suggestion: Keep water on hand and fill up as regularly as you can with water. Not only will you stay hydrated, but you will eat less and feel more satisfied.

The Battle: Potato Salad vs. Baked Beans
The Victor: Baked Beans

Both options are similar in calories with brand choice being the only game changer. However, regardless of the brand or if it’s homemade, beans will almost always remain victorious. They generally contain about double the protein and 50% less fat than potato salad. Just remember to keep your portions under control.

Fun Suggestion: Eat veggies first. If there is a vegetable platter present, fill up on at least a cup of fresh vegetables before indulging on the rest of your plate. You won’t want other sides after you’re full, so eat veggies early on. Your parents weren’t crazy when they told you to always eat your veggies first.

The Battle: Angel Food Cake with Strawberries vs. Apple Pie
The Victor: Angel Food Cake

Angel food cake is a great dessert because it’s so light. Even with a decent sized chunk, the calories can still be kept under control with moderation. Load it up with fresh strawberries for the perfect summer BBQ dessert.

Fun Suggestion: Treat fresh fruit as your dessert. Watermelon is healthy and delicious, and it can help that sweet tooth feel satisfied without filling your body with added sugars. Try serving it chilled to cool you off during the summer as well.
